Dominie Patel

Practice Overview

Dominie joined Chambers in 2024 following the successful completion of her pupillage under the supervision of Nia Gowman (Court of Protection; Inquests and Inquiries; and Family) and Hywel Evans (Civil; and Actions Against the Police).

Dominie studied law at Queen Mary University of London and was awarded First Class Honours. She completed the LLM Legal Practice (Barristers) at BPP University, London, achieving a Distinction. She also completed a Public Law LLM at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

During her studies, Dominie volunteered as a student adviser at the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre, represented appellants in welfare benefit tribunal hearings, and delivered advocacy workshops to sixth form students as a mentor on the Griffin LAW pro bono initiative run by Gray’s Inn.

Prior to joining Chambers, Dominie worked as a Teaching Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies. She also worked as an intern at the law reform charity JUSTICE.

Dominie is a calm, sensible, and empathetic advocate. She accepts instructions across all areas of Chambers’ work.

Notable and Reported cases

  • Civil

    Dominie has been instructed in cases on the small claims track and fast track. Dominie is regularly instructed in personal injury, road traffic accidents, credit hire, landlord and tenant, and contract matters.  She also receives instructions to draft advice in civil claims.

  • Court of Protection

    Dominie is frequently instructed in Court of Protection cases, which feature issues such as capacity disputes, residence, and care.

  • Immigration & Asylum

    Dominie regularly appears in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber in a range of immigration matters including asylum and human rights. 

  • Public and Administrative Law

    In keeping with her LLM in Public Law, Dominie has a keen interest in public and administrative law. During pupillage, Dominie worked on a variety of public law issues such as advising on prospects of success in judicial review, drafting grounds of judicial review, and drafting particulars of claims. During pupillage, Dominie shadowed Nia Gowman’s work on the Covid-19 Inquiry.

  • Crime

    Dominie regularly appears in both the magistrates court and Crown Court. Dominie has conducted first hearings, mention hearings, bail applications, pre-trial preparation hearings, magistrates’ court trials, breach hearings, and committal for sentence hearings both for the prosecution and defence.

  • Family

    Dominie has acted for appellants and respondents in non-molestation order and occupation order application hearings, which all featured serious domestic violence issues. Dominie also accepts instructions in public and private children law.
